Rockhill Tenants Collective

Residents of the Rockhill apartments in Montreal

Severity:
Critical - resolve urgently
Status:
In progress - the administration acknowledges the issue and is working on it
Problem Description:

The orange metal stairs in the center of the complex. For some reason, someone decided to remove the rubber mats. However, these non-slip mats were specifically intended for the safety of the tenants: these stairs become extraordinarily slippery and dangerous when the temperature drops below 0, whether they have been cleared of snow or not.

21 Décembre 2023 Mats were added, but they were too small and not fixed to the staircases so there was a risk of slipping. The mats were removed therefore the orginal problem is unresolved.

15 January 2024: The mats on the stairs leading to the bus stop are still not secured and have not been cleared of snow.

Problem impact:

The stairs are very slippery at the moment, which poses a risk for those who use them.

Risks:

Risks of sprains, fractures or worse.

Next steps:

During the meeting of December 21, 2023, the Building Manager informed us that an action had already been taken, that an order of mats of good size had been made. In the meantime, they were going to remove the mats because they were risky. We were able to see that on the same evening of our meeting, December 22, 2023, the mats had been removed from the staircase next to the entrance to the Gym, but nothing had been done for the staircase in the direction of the bus stop.

Follow-ups

The non-slip mats placed on the outdoor stairs are not secured in place and slide easily. Some of them are already not on the stairs. This is especially dangerous as a pedestrian may enter the stairs without realizing that the mat could possibly slip under their feet, leading to a fall from the top of the stairs!

22 December 2023: the mats were removed from the stairs over the gym, but remain in the stairs to the bus and are not pinned down.

The Collective

Affected by the deterioration of the Rockhill Apartments in Montreal, some tenants began meeting in July 2023 to consider ways to address the situation.

From these meetings emerged the Rockhill Tenants Collective, a spontaneous group dedicated to upholding the rights of residents and the heritage value of this once upscale and avant-garde complex.
